Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day because it was a time set aside to honor the nation's Civil War dead by decorating their graves. It was first widely observed on May 30, 1868, to commemorate the sacrifices of Civil War soldiers, by proclamation of General John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of former sailors and soldiers. On May 5, 1868, Logan declared in General Order No. 11 that:
The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land. In this observance no form of ceremony is prescribed, but posts and comrades will in their own way arrange such fitting services and testimonials of respect as circumstances may permit.
During the first celebration of Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, after which 5,000 participants helped to decorate the graves of the more than 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried in the cemetery.
This 1868 celebration was inspired by local observances of the day in several towns throughout America that had taken place in the three years since the Civil War. In fact, several Northern and Southern cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, including Columbus, Miss.; Macon, Ga.; Richmond, Va.; Boalsburg, Pa.; and Carbondale, Ill.
In 1966, the federal government, under the direction of President Lyndon Johnson, declared Waterloo, N.Y., the official birthplace of Memorial Day. They chose Waterloo—which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—because the town had made Memorial Day an annual, community-wide event during which businesses closed and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.
By the late 1800s, many communities across the country had begun to celebrate Memorial Day and, after World War I, observances also began to honor those who had died in all of America's wars. In 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday to be celebrated the last Monday in May. (Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor all veterans, living and dead, is celebrated each year on November 11.)
Today, Memorial Day is celebrated at Arlington National Cemetery with a ceremony in which a small American flag is placed on each grave. Also, it is customary for the president or vice-president to give a speech honoring the contributions of the dead and lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. About 5,000 people attend the ceremony annually.
Several Southern states continue to set aside a special day for honoring the Confederate dead, which is usually called Confederate Memorial Day.

So....at least 2 of you will miss me. Donna says that AOL won't let her become a "Follower", and I say to her, Donna, just give me a comment once in awhile. How does one do that? Let me show you. Last Post ?
This may be my last post, at least for awhile. It is increasingly difficult to develop material which readers might find interesting. I live a very mundane life, actually, and is it weren't for my spiritual life, it would be pretty boring. The number of daily "hits" on this site have continually gone down and there have been only a couple of comments left. So, I may come back from time to time if something REALLY interesting and significant occurs in my life.
In the meanwhile, I leave you with this:
Clay Balls
A man was exploring caves by the Seashore. In one of the caves he found a canvas bag with a bunch of hardened clay balls. It was like someone had rolled clay balls and left them out in the sun to bake. They didn't look like much, but they intrigued the man, so he took the bag out of the cave with him. As he strolled along the beach, he would throw the clay balls one at a time out into the ocean as far as he could.
He thought little about it, until he dropped one of the clay balls and it cracked open on a rock . Inside was a beautiful, precious stone!
Excited, the man started breaking open the remaining clay balls. Each contained a similar treasure. He found thousands of dollars worth of jewels in the 20 or so clay balls he had left.
Then it struck him. He had been on the beach a long time. He had thrown maybe 50 or 60 of the clay balls with their hidden treasure into the ocean waves. Instead of thousands of dollars in treasure, he could have taken home tens of thousands, but he had just thrown it away!
It's like that with people. We look at someone, maybe even ourselves, and we see the external clay vessel.. It doesn't look like much from the outside. It isn't always beautiful or sparkling, so we discount it.
We see that person as less important than someone more beautiful or stylish or well known or wealthy. But we have not taken the time to find the treasure hidden inside that person.
There is a treasure in each and every one of us. If we take the time to get to know that person, and if we ask God to show us that person the way He sees them, then the clay begins to peel away and the brilliant gem begins to shine forth.
May we not come to the end of our lives and find out that we have thrown away a fortune in friendships because the gems were hidden in bits of clay. May we see the people in our world as God sees them. .

EXPLAIN GOD
I don't know if Danny really wrote this but in a 12 year old's mind, this is how he explains God.
Explain God
It was written by an 8 year old, Danny Dutton of Chula Vista, CA, for his third grade homework assignment. The assignment was to explain God. Wonder if any of us could do as well?
One of God's main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on earth. He doesn't make grown-ups, just babies. I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way He doesn't have to take up His valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers.God's second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things, pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn't have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because He hears everything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in His ears, unless He has thought of a way to turn it off.God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn't go wasting His time by going over your Mom and Dad's head asking for something they said you couldn't have.Atheists are people who don't believe in God. I don't think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren't any who come to our church.Jesus is God's Son. He used to do all the hard work like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn't want to learn about God. They finally got tired of Him preaching to them and they crucified Him. But He was good and kind, like His Father and He told His Father that they didn't know what they were doing and to forgive them and God said O.K.His Dad (God) appreciated everything that He had done and all His hard work on earth so He told Him He didn't have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So He did. And now He helps His Dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones He can take care of Himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they've got it worked out so that one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there's anybody you want to make happy, it's God. Don't skip church to do something you think will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides the sun doesn't come out at the beach until noon anyway. If you don't believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can't go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He's around you when you're scared in the dark or when you can't swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids.But...you shouldn't just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and He can take me back anytime He pleases.
And...that's why I believe in God.

Happy Mother's Day 2009
I wish everyone a very blessed day where we honor and celebrate our mothers whether they are still with us or not.
My mother has been deceased for more than 40 years, but I can see her face and and hear her voice as if she was here alongside me. The voice could speak some pretty harsh words to me, but only when I deserved it. My sister, the eldest of 3, was a kind of second mother to me because of our age difference (13 years) and because of my mother's poor health starting in her middle age. My mother was 43 when I was born but I developed without any physical handicaps which are fairly common when the mother is over 40. Many of my friends think I have some mental challenges, but what do they know?
My brother, 6 years older than me, was pretty much my mom's favorite as she anticipated that he would follow in our father's footsteps in church ministry. He did, if fact,, become a pastor when he was about 25.
Both my sister and brother were little angels, while I was a devil from as long as I can remember. Thankfully, I did finally adopt behavior and character more appropriate for my upbringing. But that's what moms are for, right.
Anyway, Mom, I love you and I'm sorry for all the grief I gave you while growing up.
Blessings, Desert Dave

I Promise Not To Heckle My Dodger Friends
Well, maybe a little. After all, I put up with years of some pretty bad heckling about Barry Bonds. Dodger fans still like to make the comparison that Bonds was a terrible person even without the ALLEGED steroid useage and of course Manny is this great person who simply just made an mistake. Tell that to the Red Sox.
The fact is that Bonds was the face of the Giants franchise for 15 years, and arguably the best pure hitter ever in Major League Baseball. We had reason to not throw him under the bus because of all he did for the team. Manny, on the other hand has been a Dodger for less than a full season, and held a gun to the owners heads before he would sign for 2009. But the Dodger fans I hear can't wait to get him back.
There's a great deal of hypocrisy when it comes to who we like and who we don't like. I'm as guilty as the next person and I'll admit it. On one occasion at a social event, I was harshly taken to task for even suggesting that Eric Gagne had "juiced". When the news came out awhile back about him and Lo Duca, I could have gone to this individual and been really nasty to him. I didn't. Why not?
And so comes the reason for this posting. If I am to live for Christ, I must live my life in the same fashion as did He. Would it please Him if I went to this individual and reminded him of his prior actions toward me? And what real purpose would it serve. Would it make me feel good to embarass him? You bet it would. Would it be right to do so? I don''t think so, and so I don't do it.
As a lifelong Giants fan, I "hate" the Dodgers, as I'm sure they "hate" the Giants. When I see or hear Giants fans acting badly toward Dodger fans, I dislike it as much as I do the other way around.
Blessings, Desert Dave

Are You A Good Person?
http://upchucky.com/person.html
Almost everyone thinks that they are a good person... and will admit having a bad habit or two.... Have you ever wondered how you might look in God's eye? Have you ever wondered.... "Am I good enough to go to Heaven?" How can you know for sure? You can find out by testing your lifestyle to God's rules....... The Ten Commandments. Most people say, "Well, I've broken one or two, but nothing too serious, like murder, etc." So let's randomly go through God's Commandments and see how well you do...

OK, So I'm going to turn political a bit.
Watching Mike Huckabee tonight led me to go on his website which, in turn, led me to apply to have this blog linked to his site. Mike's attraction to me, first of all, is that he is a Christian, and secondly a conservative. I did not follow him that closely during the Republican primaries, so I'm not that familiar with all his political positions. Despite that, I endorse him 100%.
I don't know if the Huckabee producers will accept this blog as a link, but I'll let you know if it ends up there, but here's the link: http://www.huckpac.com/?Fuseaction=Blogs.Home.

Happy May Day Everyone
But what is May Day actually other than the date of May 1?
Well, for one thing, it's an international distress call whether from ship, shore, or air. If you check the following website, you'll find that it is more than one thing.
http://www.infoplease.com/spot/mayday.html
As an introduction to the above site, I quote the following:
"May 1st, often called May Day, just might have more holidays than any other day of the year. It's a celebration of Spring. It's a day of political protests. It's a neopagan festival, a saint's feast day, and a day for organized labor. In many countries, it is a national holiday."
There is much more info available on the site itself.
I kind of like the celebration of Spring myself. If my information is correct, it is hardly Spring in the SF Bay Area today, with heavy rains forecast. Sure hope it doesn't interfere with my Giants game tonight. Today is a typical May day here in the desert. 87 degrees F right now with slight overcast and just enough breeze to make the heat bearable.
So, whatever you're doing this day, have a great weekend and keep safe including staying away from piggies.= -;)

How Private Is Your Business?
I have just finished a novel by Jeffery Deaver, one of my favorite authors. For those of you familiar with Deaver, it's a Lincoln Rhyme novel named Broken Window. I don't want to say too much here about the content for fear of spoiling it. That said, the "environment" of the novel is a world-wide information service company--the huge data miner Strategic Systems Datacorp. Their files contain everything about everyone, including you and me (?).
While the description of the extent of the contents of these files is likely to be premature, I believe it does portend what may come in the future. This information, if not used improperly is pretty benign, but who's to say it will always be used properly. See Aldous Huxley's Brave New World or George Orwell's 1984.
Do you know that every time you use your supermarket club card that the data of exactly what you purchased is transferred to a data bank? The drugs you buy at the pharmacy on your Visa card? Do you know that everything you buy at Costco is memorized forever? Your membership at the health club, the country club, Borders, the websites you visit.....they're all in a databank. Oh, don't forget the appliance warranty cards you fill out. They have lots of private information on them. Your warranty doesn't need submission of the form anyway.
Ok, so be careful out there. If you don't keep an eye on your identity, there are people out there who will.

PSA ?
No, that doesn't stand for Pacific Southwest Airlines. Remember them? If so, you're as old as I am. It was a great local airline which ended up with others as US Airways. Still a great local airline? Not so much.
PSA stands for Prostate Specific Antigen, which measures the amount of some sort of agent generated by the prostate gland and can, but not necessarily, the presence of cancer cells. There have been a number of medical reports recently issued which lead one to believe that the screening is a waste of time and money. The theory is that receiving a PSA reading over a certain number will cause too many men to go seek useless treatments because, "you'll die of something else before you will of prostate cancer", and you'll diminish your quality of life by seeking treatment especially that of radical surgery.
Let me tell you something. Screenings can save your life. Blaming cancer screening for doing more harm than good is targeting the wrong villain. It's not the screening process itself, it's the failure to identify which cancers are realtively bgenigh and which are aggresive and deadly. Doctors who fail sufficiently to explain the difference between dangerous and non-dangerous tumors are the problem.
So, go and do the right thing. If your'e 50 or more, make sure you get an anuual degital exam as well as the simple PSA blood test. My treatment, brachytherapy or radioactive seed implementation is brought my PS down from 6.3 to 3.5, to 2.6, and now down to 1.5 all in 9 months. I believe it will cotinue to go down for at least another 6 months or so. My treatment didn't affect my quality of life whatsoever.

Scooter is So Sad
Poor little guy, his "Mommy" is at a Ladies golf getaway since yesterday noon, and won't return until late tomorrow. He only ate 1/2 of his breakfast yesterday, (he sometimes does that, saving some of it for later), but he has neither drunk water or eaten anything since.
Although he's happy to take a walk and is active as usual, once home he just lies in his crate and looks at me with those enormous brown eyes. I miss his "Mommy" also, but I know where she is, why she isn't her and when she'll be back. Scooter doesn't know squat other than she's not here. On top of that, I'm going to be golfing this afternoon and going out to dinner after that.
How nice it is for we humans to know that we can count on God in our lives, always there, always looking out for us, always loving us, and always knowing that he is going to return to earth to reunite with true Christians everywhere.

American Tea Parties
When I started this endeavor, I pledged (to myself) that I would eschew politics, even though I am a strong believer in both partisan and non-partisan politics. However, I feel compelled to write something about the April 15th demonstrations which have obscenely been called "tea bagging" by it's opponents. If you're not familiar with the term, "google" it.
I have posted two links below and have used the blogspot directions for making them clickable, but if they don't turn out that way, please just highlight them, copy, and paste into your browser address bar. The first link shows Jeaneane Garofolo on Keith Olberman's program. She states in strong terms that anyone who participated in the protests was a RACIST, and that the only reason they were there was because the hated a black man being in the White House. If you do any search at all, you will find many, many blogs that make the same observation.
The second link features a piece from Town Hall which puts my "spin" on it which is that this was not anti-Obama, it was for his current policies. This was not a Republican program, it was not a Democratic program, it was not a Fox News program except in the context that FN was the only network interested in reporting on it. Good grief, since when did public protest become anti-American. We've put up for years with public hostility towards parties, people and policies. Is it because we now are supposed to have "change"? I believe that both parties and both administrations are equally guilty for causing our current crisis.
Anyway, that's my rant for the day. I really hope that some of you out there will share your opinions on this topic.

Rediscovering God In America
Last night, Tuesday, was a weekly home small group Bible study. We were privileged to see the Newt & Callista Gingrich DVD, "Rediscovering God in America". It is a powerful film in that it quotes the founders of our country and shows the various monuments that reference our nation's founding under God.
I don't know about you, but I am constantly bombarded with comments that our founders were really not religious and they had left England in order to escape religion, etc. The quotations of our founding fathers puts that where it belongs....in the garbage bag. The fact is that this nation has turned away from it's beginnings and has turned more and more towards secularism. God is not allowed in our public buildings, schools or any government facility, not even the Ten Commandments in a courtroom.
This film should be of interest to anyone, religious or secular. It portrays our history. Details on how to obtain may be seen at the following website:

Sorry I can't seem to make the above a clickable link, but I tried.

Well, a long, long time ago, I told you that I would post a pic of our little boy.Notice that he is a very, very smart dog and is a full fledged GIANTS fan. He wears his hat with pride and he watches every game with me. He whimpered a lot during the San Diego series and yesterday for the opening Dodger game.
The primary message of this post is to say that the way to go when you pick out your next dog, is to go the "rescue" route. Unless one is into selective breeding or showing a dog, don't buy a purebred or especially through a puppy mill. Legitimate pet stores are no longer selling dogs or cats. A shelter will not allow you to adopt a dog unless it has been neutered, micro chipped and had all shots. They also screen the applicants for the suitability of the particular animal to the family adopting. So many, many dogs need a forever home. Go to all the local shelters, you will fall in love, I guarantee it.
I have had 6 dogs, all purebred, before Scooter, and he is absolutely the best I've ever owned. Do the right thing, please.

Resurrection Friday
So much to think about today, so much to remember about our Saviour being so humiliated and tortured leading up to His crucifixion. But wait, there's more...HE AROSE and lives at the right hand of God.
Today was teeth cleaning day........booyah, you say. Well, going to my dental hygenist always reminds me of the terrible loss she suffered almost 2 years ago. Her first born, (and only son), died from an drug overdose. Apparently not an habitual user, he got caught up with user friends at UC Berkeley. A senior with a splendid academic record, athletic, raised in a Jewish home, literall threw his life away for a "high".
I confess that my first born son, an adoptee, also threw his life away for quick fixes. Adopted at birth, he became familiar with drugs in the US Army, was discharged for their use, ended up in State Prison several times. Although I love him because God commands me to do so, I have not for many years now had a parental love for him. I have a family to protect from his violent life style and we have no relationship. He has broken so many promises, I can no longer trust him around my loved ones.
But God doesn't break promises and He has promised that if we believe in Him and trust in His death and resurrection, we will join him for eternal life. So, I pray for my son that he will come to know Jesus.
Thank God for a Risen Christ.

Yesterday was an amazing day for me. My brother's widow and my oldest niece's widower visited us from out of town. My niece only passed away last January after a 3 1/2 year battle with breast cancer.
Since I was not really very close with my brother, I was not very close with his children either, mainly because of distance. My niece's last residence was in Washington. We would sometimes exchange Christmas cards, some years not. I had thought of my niece as kind of a whiny little girl and young adult. Whether that was true of not, I no longer remember.
During her husband's visit with us, I learned a great deal about my niece. I learned how she had supported her husband in his career, had raised two beautiful sons who are very successful in their careers. I learned that her husband, who had been her primary caregiver for sometime now, is absolutely devastated by her death, even though it released him from his caregiving. I learned how she constantly talked about Uncle Dave (that's me) and how I would come up from San Diego (US Navy) and visit them on weekends. I also learned that after learning about her grave illness and phoning her, she told one of her sisters that she could now go peacefully since she and I had reconnected. She died less than a week later.
I grieve for my beautiful niece, but I grieve more for the years that I was not connected to this wonderful spiritual woman. WHAT A WASTE ! I am joyful that I finally did for just that one moment, and I am joyful that I will see her again in Heaven.
To my readers: Don't let family and friends drift away, no matter what the reason.

Relationships Sunday
I want to share with you a number of definitions of a truly loving relationship. They are not my definitions, but I subscribe to them. The first one follows:
A loving relationship is one in which individuals trust each othere enough to become vulnerable, secure that the other person won't take advantage. It neither exploits nor takes the other for granted. It involves much communication, much sharing, and much tenderness.
Am I pontificating? I hope not. Some of what I post are things I've come across which have very special meaning to me. Enjoy...............or not? More tomorrow.
I Corinthians 13:4

Question: Do young people find that time goes much slower than for older persons. I can easily remember when I couldn't hardly wait for summer vacation from school. Later on, in my professional life, it was always looking forward to Wednesday (hump day) and Friday, the magic last working day of the week. Only 3 months until our vacation.... summer will soon be here.
How quickly the priorities change as we age. I have come to cherish every day that God gives me and try, not very hard sometimes, to make it a worthwhile day, a day which will please my Creator. Yes, as you can tell from previous posts, I definitely look forward to baseball season, and since I'm too far away to get Warrior, Sharks or 49er telecasts, I can only really get my sports fix with the Giants.
But for me, time flyssssssss by. Good grief, 25% of 2009 has gone by and I wonder sometimes how well I spent the last 3 months. I know that so many of those 90+ days were probably not very pleasing to the Lord, and I can only pray that those days will become fewer and fewer.
Give me some feedback on how your time goes by. I'd appreciate it and you.

WE ARE BACK
Well, back from Arizona with fond memories of seeing friends and seeing GIANTS baseball..
Six more days to opening day, and counting. The Giants, when they use their young and their rookies seem to be a winning ballclub. When the veterans play, not so much. The Giants are stuck for years to come with Rowand and especially Barry Zero, excuse me, I mean Zito. But one never knows when it comes to baseball. After all, I haven't seen a World Series championship since I fell in love with them back in 1962.
As we approach the Easter, (or Resurrection as I prefer) season, and as our nation falls deeper and deeper into financial chaos, I find comfort in a song, the gist of which is, "Because He lives, I can face tomorrow". Believe it, HE LIVES !
God's love to all, see you tomorrow, maybe ! =:)

Wednesday Take On The Lord's Prayer
The Lord's Prayer
Ever wonder what prayer would be like if it was answered duringthe prayer? Would you be shocked, embarrassed, annoyed,
thrilled, or speechless?
Think about how you might respond if this were to happen:
Our Father, Who Art In Heaven.
Yes?
Don't interrupt me. I'm praying.
But... you called me!
Called you? No, I didn't call you. I'm praying. Our Father who
art in Heaven...
There... you did it again.
Did what?
Called me. You said, "Our Father, who art in Heaven."
Well, here I am. What's on your mind?
But I didn't mean anything by it. I was, you know, just saying my
prayers for the day. I always say the Lord's Prayer. It makes me
feel good, kind of like fulfilling a duty.
Well, all right. Go on.
Okay. Hallowed be Thy name...
Hold it right there. What do you mean by that?
By what?
By "Hallowed be Thy name"?
It means... good grief, I don't know what it means. How in the
world should I know? It's just a part of the prayer. By the way,
what does it mean?
It means honored, holy, wonderful.
Ah, that makes sense. I never thought about what hallowed
meant before. Thanks. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done,
on earth as it is in Heaven...
Do you really mean that?
Sure, why not?
What are you doing about it?
Doing? Why, nothing, I guess. I just think it would be good if
you got control of everything down here like you have up there.
We're kind of in a mess down here you know.
Yes, I know; but have I got control of you?
Well, I go to church.
That isn't what I asked you. What about your bad temper?
You've really got a problem there, you know. And what
about some of the language you use and the stuff you talk
about? What about your impatience with others and
thinking that you're better than they are? What about the
people you've judged? Remember, that's MY job, not
yours.
Now hold on just a minute! Stop picking on me! I'm just as
good as some of the rest of those people at church!
Excuse me? I thought you were praying for MY will to be
done? If that is to happen, it will have to start with the
ones who are praying for it... like you, for example.
Oh, all right. I guess I do have some issues. Now that you
mention it, I could probably name some others.
So could I.
I haven't thought about it very much until now, but I really would
like to cut out some of those things. I would like to... you know,
be really free.
Good. Now we're getting somewhere. We'll work together,
you and me. I'm proud of you.
Look, Lord, if you don't mind, I need to finish up here. This is
taking a lot longer than it usually does.
Give us this day, our daily bread...
You need to cut out some of the bread. You're a little over-
weight as it is.
Hey, wait a minute! What is this? Here I am doing my religious
duty, and all of a sudden you break in and remind me of all my
problems.
Praying is a dangerous thing. You could end up changed, you know.
That's what I'm trying to bring across to you.
Remember, you called me; and here I am. It's too
late to stop now. Keep praying.
................
Well, go on.
I'm scared to.
Scared? Of what?
I know what you'll say.
Try me and see.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us...
What about Susan and others who have done you wrong?
See... I knew it! I knew you would bring her up! Why, Lord?
She's told lies about me and spread stories. She never paid back
the money she owes me. I've sworn to get even with her!
But... your prayer. What about your prayer?
I didn't, you know, really mean it.
Well, at least you're honest. But it's quite a load carrying
around all that bitterness and resentment, isn't it?
Yes, but I'll feel better as soon as I get even with her. Boy, have
I got some plans for her. She'll wish she had never been born!
No, you won't feel any better. You'll feel worse. Revenge
isn't sweet. You know how unhappy you are. Well, I can
change that.
You can? How?
Forgive Susan. Then I'll forgive you; and the hate and sin
will be Susan's problem, not yours. You will have settled the
problem as far as you are concerned.
OK... you know... you're right. You always are. And more than
I want revenge, I want to be right with You. (Sigh)... All right,
all right... I forgive her.
There now! Wonderful! How do you feel?
Hmm. Well... not bad. Not bad at all! In fact, I feel pretty
good! You know, I don't think I'll be going to bed all uptight
tonight. I haven't been getting much sleep lately, you know.
Yeah, I know. But you're not through with your prayer, are
you? Go on.
Oh, all right.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil...
Good! Good! I'll do that. Just don't put yourself in a place
where you can be tempted.
What do you mean by that?
You know what I mean.
Yeah, I know.
OK. Go ahead and finish your prayer.
For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.
Amen.
Do you know what would bring me glory and what would
really make me happy?
No, but I would like to know. I want to please you now. I've
really made a mess of things. I want to truly follow you. I can
see now how great that would be. So tell me... how do I make
you happy?
You just did.

Can't Win 'Em All Monday
OK, so the Giants lost today to Seattle. On the + side, it was a beautiful day, not too hot and no wind like yesterday. Very pleasant watching the game and chatting with good friends from San Francisco.
We have good friends here in Sun City, many of whom are recent cancer survivors or are still fighting the good fight. I don't think I would call this a cancer cluster, but probably more of an "age cluster". This include me as most of you know, but I'm optimistic that my next PSA reading will be 0.00000000. That's what I'm praying for of course.
Devotions for couples: Ephesians 4:32 "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you."
Forgiving turns off the videotape of pained memory. Forgiving sets you free. Forgiving is the only way to stop the circle of unfair pain turning in your memory. Forgiving means you no longer allow what has happened in the past to influence you. You are free, the person who hurt you is free. You are both free to love each other.
Tomorrow will be a great day.
Please feel free to leave comments or be a "follower". It's the only way for me to know whether I'm doing something worthwhile or not. Thank you.

Scottsdale Sunday
I wonder if I can keep up with the alliterative post titles. Maybe tomorow should be Maudlin Monday or ??
8AM this morning found Mary and I at our church, Southwest Community Church. SCC has an interesting and vibrant history. Started with 15 members in 1970, it has outgrown 5 different venues and is now bursting the doors of our present site. When we first moved here in November, 2002, the Senior Pastor had just resigned with no replacement in sight. We had a monstrous mortgage of $13, 000,000 on the property consisting of one large building and 42 acres of prime Indian Wells property. It took over 2 years to find a new Senior/Lead Pastor and we finally found a real gem . Bob Thune is the older brother of John Thune the junior Senator from South Dakota,(or is it North Dakota?) Bob was called from Omaha Nebraska where he had pastored for 20 years. To make a long story short, SCC was able to completely pay off the $13MM last summer. God truly blessed the ministry of SCC, and Mary and I have been truly blessed through our now 6 year membership. Current attendance, in season, runs close to 4,500 persons.
The drive here to Scottsdale was very, very boring, only surpassed by California's I5. But here we are in a very nice rented condo and tomorrow is GIANTS BASEBALL.
Today's Daily Bread:
My life is a painting created by God,
And as such I've nothing to boast;
Reflecting theimage of Christ to the world
Is what I desire the most

Sunny Saturday
Well, heck, it's always sunny in the desert. Not quite true, but it sounds good. Today was Couples Putters here in Sun City. Mary was attending a cancer seminar with a good friend of hers who has cancer, so her husband and I "paired up" as a couple. We couldn't participate in the sweeps since were weren't members as a couple, But, very ironically, the two of us had a great score. For those of you who do not live in SCPD, we have an 18 hole putting course with par 2s, 3s, & 4s. It's straight putting with no gimmicks like windmills etc.
Today's devotional for men: Proverbs 27:6 "Wounds from a friend are better than man kisses from an enemy". Harry Truman said: "if you wanta friend in Washington, DC, get a dog. While women seem naturally to acquire and maintain close friendships, most men find it difficult to do so. Men seem to settle for acquaintances and colleagues, and friendships remain undeveloped.
The time will come when support, encouragement, counsel and help are in short supply. In Washington and elsewhere, a dog is okay--he will lick your face and bring your slippers, but only a friend will deliver what you really need.
Today's devotional for couples: Ephesians 4:30,31 " Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger. "
Anger is bound to occur between 2 imperfect people. But the Scriptures are talking about the type of anger which lingers, is never resolved and drives people further and further apart.

First Blogging Day
Was I too ambitious to start this? Do I really have anything interesting to write about? Will I take the time to do it right or will it go the way of some of my other projects. Hope not. So let's see. What did Desert Dave do of interest today?
Well, I created this blog for one thing. I took Mr. Scooter out twice today. Mr. Scooter is a rescue dog who has been with us since late October. He is part Lhaso Apso and part ???maybe poodle??. It took me 27 years to convince my beloved wife that we should have a dog and finally she reluctantly agreed. Guess what folks. Right, she fell in love with this little guy and now he's more hers than mind. Everybody loves him. People stop us on the street to ask us what he is. Guess I'll have to post a picture when I get the chance.
I didn't do much else today other than packing some stuff for our trip to Scottsdale next week. Why Scottsdale? On come on! The spring training headquarters for our beloved SF Giants. We'll be there until Sunday the 29th, attending 3 games in Scottsdale and 1 in Peoria. We'll be seeing our friends, Norm and Marilyn Bunas and other Giants fans, mostly my BFF Giants fan, Hank.
I fully intend to keep this up while we're gone, but we'll just have to see.
